Working in Europe: The Reality Behind the Dream
When people ask why more Americans don’t just pack up and move to Europe for better work protections, I have to laugh. As someone who’s actually done it, I can tell you it’s not quite that simple — but it might be worth it anyway.
The Path Less Taken
I’m moved here to the UK behavioral product designer for aviation, which is about as niche as it sounds. Even with this specialized skill set, getting to Europe wasn’t a matter of just deciding to go. It was a complex deep stack of paperwork of company support, visa applications, and yes, quite a bit of money. Without my employer’s backing, I honestly don’t know if I could have managed it.
What Nobody Tells You About London Life
Living in London has been a masterclass in trade-offs. The good stuff? It’s really good. The public transportation makes most cities in the USA look like a toy train set. There’s something profound about living in an international community where cultures blend seamlessly, and the British commitment to inclusivity isn’t just talk, it’s woven into daily life.
I’ve fallen in love with how Brits show genuine respect for each other, regardless of background, ability, race, orientation. It’s not the loud, obvious American-style friendliness I grew up with, but something quieter and, in its way, deeper. Like it never mattered, we are all people.
